Day-to-day costs are covered, but with no cushion: an unexpected bill of a few hundred euros will hurt. Keep a close eye on your variable spending.
How the calculation works
Total disposable income (what the French call “reste à vivre”) is the difference between your net monthly income and the sum of housing and other fixed costs. The amount per person divides that total by the number of people in the household, yourself included. The share of income shows what fraction of what you earn is left after fixed costs.
Count as other fixed costs everything that is taken or paid on a set date and that you cannot cut overnight: energy, insurance, internet and phones, loans, maintenance payments, transport, childcare, subscriptions.
The reading thresholds
The reading is based on the amount left per person per month. These thresholds are benchmarks specific to this site, not a banking or regulatory standard; banks apply their own criteria.
- Critical: under €400 per person. Day-to-day spending is hard to cover without cutting into essentials.
- Tight: €400 to €699 per person. Everyday life is covered, but an unexpected cost is felt.
- Comfortable: €700 per person or more. There is room for the unexpected, leisure and savings.
The limits
The calculation does not tell an adult from a child and does not take the cost of living in your region into account. The same disposable income does not mean the same thing in Paris and in the countryside. Use the result to compare your months and your scenarios with one another, rather than as an absolute verdict.
