The envelope method, 2026 edition
In its original form, the envelope method meant slipping banknotes into labelled envelopes. Today’s version keeps the idea, a visible limit for each category, and does without the notes.

The principle: a visible limit for each category
At the start of the month, you split the money set aside for variable spending between a few envelopes: groceries, transport, leisure. When an envelope is empty, you stop, or you consciously decide to borrow from another. The method forbids nothing: it makes the trade-off visible at the moment you make it.
It works because it replaces a constant decision, “can I afford this?”, with a rule set once and for all. You spend without guilt as long as there is a balance left in the right envelope, and without surprises at the end of the month.
What changes in 2026
We pay by card or phone: no more banknotes to count. Envelopes become virtual, one amount per category, and tracking is based on your real transactions. You keep the discipline of envelopes without carrying cash around.
Fixed costs (rent, insurance, subscriptions) do not need an envelope: they are already taken on a fixed date. Envelopes only cover what varies.
Choosing your envelopes and their amounts
Four to seven envelopes are enough. Take the categories where you spend regularly and where trade-offs are possible: groceries, fuel or transport, leisure and going out, clothes, medical costs that are not reimbursed, gifts. An “unexpected” envelope absorbs the rest.
Example: €2,400 of income, €1,400 of fixed costs, €200 of savings. That leaves €800 to share out: €380 for groceries, €120 for transport, €120 for leisure, €50 for clothes, €80 for the unexpected and €50 for gifts. 380 + 120 + 120 + 50 + 80 + 50 = 800: the total comes out exactly right.
- Start from the average of your last three months, not from what you would like to spend.
- Then trim one envelope by 5 to 10% at a time, not all of them at once.
- Avoid more than ten envelopes: beyond that, nobody keeps up with them.
Carrying over the balance
Is there money left in an envelope at the end of the month? You have two choices. Carry it over: €40 unspent out of a €380 grocery envelope takes it to €420 the following month. Or move it to savings, which turns every economy into visible progress.
Carrying over suits irregular spending: clothes, gifts, health. For groceries, it is often better to move the balance to savings, or the limit loosens. An overspend is handled the other way round: you take from another envelope, knowingly, rather than leaving a negative balance hanging around.
Envelopes in MoneyWr
In the Month tab, an “Envelopes” card opens the list of your envelopes, each with a progress bar and its remaining balance. To create one, you choose the category, the monthly amount, and whether the balance carries over from one month to the next.
An envelope’s spending is the sum of the unexpected expenses you entered in that category and, if you have connected a bank, the transactions imported into the same category. The remaining balance is the amount, plus the carry-over, minus the spending. MoneyWr warns you at 80% and at 100% of the envelope.
Pitfalls to avoid
An oversized “miscellaneous” envelope becomes a catch-all that hides your real spending. An envelope set too tight in the very first month is discouraging: better to set it at yesterday’s reality and tighten it afterwards. And an envelope you never check is useless: take ten seconds at each significant purchase, or look at your bars once a week.
A five-minute check-in on Sunday is enough: which envelopes are nearly empty, which have room, should you move €20 from one to another? That small weekly adjustment avoids the big reckoning at month-end, when it is too late to correct anything.
